August 2008
It’s been two years since out last mo:life post, and we are happy to say that we’re back, albeit with our aerial aimed in a different direction – north-west to be precise – toward South Asia.
We think we might have been the first publication dedicated to Australian mobile media news and views. For a year and a half we scoured the business landscape in search of the most interesting people doing the most interesting things in the Australian mobile space - and we came up with some wonderful interviews (molife.com.au/category/interviews).
But now we are going to cast an eye toward places like India to get some insight in to how other cultures and markets are using (or not) the mobile screen as part of their content palate. Of course, there are obvious practical reasons for trying forge links between Australia and a market with the growing appetite and girth of India - something like ninety-million handsets is not the least of them.
We’ve always known that media are complimentary, not cannibalistic. But it’s easy to get swept-up in the fervour of a new technology and to begin looking at it in isolation. So now the hype has died a little, we’ve also decided to broaden the scope of mo:life so the “mo” stands for “motion” rather than just “mobile” – think motion pictures; motion as in dynamic, changing; motion as in roving content… mobility.
This broadened view makes sense to us because we are interested in how the mobile screen can, is and will be used in relation to other screens, or in marketing parlance, how it is part of the media mix.
Our interest is still self-serving. We are content-makers and that makes us interested, by necessity, in off-the-horizon ideas and technologies that relate to getting stories in front of audiences. So we understand if our new direction isn’t your bag, but we do hope that you’ll stick with us as we tune in to what’s going on in the sub-continent and how that might relate to the guy with the Nokia sitting on the train opposite you in Parramatta, Perth or Preston.
Cheers, and welcome back.
